Old Shale Stitch for beginners, Knitting pattern, Shawl-Scarf-Cowl

BLOCKING: Basically there are 2 ways of blocking.
1.  Steam blocking: arrange item on a flat surface, hold steam iron above the surface, (not touching 
     the surface), and steam. Allow the item to dry in the shape desired.
2.  Immerse in water, and squeeze water out, or spray with water. Arrange item on a thick bath towel, 
     shape as desired, allow to dry undisturbed.

MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn (400 - 600 yards, depending on the length 
                                      being made)
6 mm knitting needles
Yarn needle.

INSTRUCTIONS: VIDEO DEMO HERE:

The Shale stitch is cast on in multiples of 18 stitches, and a repeat of 4 rows.
14 INCH WIDE SCARF-SHAWL-COWL:
Use Worsted weight yarn, and any size needle.
The pink sample shown used 4 mm needles, 
the video demo with teal yarn used 6 mm needles.

Cast on 54 stitches, then knit across the row for 10 rows (bottom band)
(Or cast on in multiples of 18 for any width desired.)

The Old Shale stitch consists of 4 rows:

1.  Knit across the row.

2.  Purl across the next row.

3.  *Knit 2 together 3 times;
yarn over knit 1, 6 times;
knit 2 together 3 times,
repeat from* across the row.

4.  Knit across the row.

Repeat steps 1 - 4, until the rectangle is as long as desired.

Then for the band on the opposite end, knit across the row for 10 rows, cast off.

END OF PATTERN

Instructions for WORKING the Old Shale Stitch  IN THE ROUND:
1.  Knit around one row.
2.  Knit around one row.
3.  *Knit 2 together 3 times;
yarn over knit 1, 6 times,
knit 2 together 3 times,
repeat from* across the row.
4.  Purl around the row.  Repeat steps 1 - 4.
