MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn,  (Approx. 1 skein of Red Heart Super Saver for size small)
9 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle

1.  Chain 107.

2.  Double crochet in the 4th stitch from the hook, (takes the place 
      of the first V stitch),
*Skip the next 2 stitches, V stitch in the next stitch: dc, ch 1, dc;
repeat from * across the row.

3.  Turn, slip stitch into the first chain 1 space, chain 4, double 
      crochet in the same space.
In every chain 1 space across the row, make a V stitch.

4.  Repeat step 3 to make the shawl as long as desired.  
     This sample worked 13 rows.

5.  BOTTOM BORDER:
Turn, slip stitch into the first chain 1 space.
Chain 4, double crochet in the same space, chain 3, slip stitch 
into the top of the
double crochet stitch (picot formed), double crochet in the same 
space.
In every chain 1 space across the row make:
2 double crochet, chain 3, slip stitch into the top of the double 
crochet, double crochet in the same space.  Fasten off, weave 
yarn ends into the finished work.

Gauge: 3 sc long and 3 sc high = 1 sq. Inch

(Work the bottom section first, then add the top section.)
Step 1: foundation chain should measure as listed in inches, OR, for a custom fit, 
foundation chain should wrap around the rib cage, 
below the bust.

1.    2 - 4 years: chain 62, (20 -21 inches long)

2.  Double crochet in the 3rd stitch from the hook, and each 
     stitch of the chain. (You will have 1 dc less than the number in 
     the foundation chain.)

3.  Chain 2,* skip the next 2 stitches, 5 double crochet in 
     the next stitch, (5 dc shellformed), 
     skip the next 2 stitches, 
     single crochet in the next, 
     repeat from * across the row, 
    ending with a double crochet in the top of the turning chain.

4.  Chain 2 and turn, *5 double crochet in the center stitch of the 5 
    dc shell of the previous row, chain 1, 
    repeat from * across the row, 
    ending with a double crochet in the last stitch.

5.  Repeat step 4 for 2 or more rows. (1 row for ages 2 - 6.)

6.  Picot Edge row:
Chain 2 and turn,* in the center of the next shell make:
3 double crochet, chain 2, slip stitch into the top of the double 
crochet (picot formed), 
2 double crochet, chain 1;
  repeat from * across the row, ending with a dc in the last stitch, 
  fasten off.






7.  Fold the rectangle in half to find the center.
Mark the following number of stitches on 
each side of the center mark.
(The row of double crochet is the top, picot edge is the bottom.)
2 - 4 yrs:      30 stitches (15 on each side.)
4 - 6 yrs::      32 stitches, 16 on each side)
Chest 26 - 30:  34 stitches (17 on each side)
     Chest 30 - 34:  36 stitches (18 on each side)
     Chest 34 - 38:  42 stitches (21 on each side)
Chest 38 - 40:  46 stitches (23 on each side)
Chest 40 - 42:  52 stitches (26 on each side)
Chest 42 - 44:  54 stitches (27 on each side)
Chest 44 - 46:  56 stitches (28 on each side)
Chest 46 - 48:  58 stitches (29 on each side)
Chest 48 - 50:  60 stitches (30 on each side)
Chest 50 - 52:  64 stitches (32 on each side)

8.  Attach yarn on either side.  
*Chain 1, single crochet in each of the designated stitches 
between the marks.
 Repeat from * for one more row.

9.  All sizes up to Chest 22 - 30 inches: 
     no increase, go to step 12.

All other sizes: Chain 1 and turn. Single crochet across the row, 
making 2 single crochet in every 10th stitch.

 44-46= 61;   46-48=63;  48- 50= 66;   50 -52= 70;    52-54= 74)

10.  All sizes above 30 inch chest: Repeat step 9. 
                            (42; 50;  55;  62;  64;  67;  70;  72;  77;  81)



11.  Chest 40 - 48, repeat step 9 one more time.
                                         (68;  70;  73;  77;  79;  84;  89)
Chest 52 - 54, repeat step 9 two more times. (92;  97)



12.  *Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch across the row.
       Repeat from * for:
       Child 2 - 4 yrs:  6 more rows
       Child 4 - 6 yrs:  7 more rows
       Chest 26 - 30:   8 more rows
 Chest 30 - 34:   9 more rows.
Chest 34 - 38:   10 more rows.
Chest 38 - 40:   11 more rows.
Chest 40 - 44:   13 more rows.
Chest 44 - 48:   15 more rows.
Chest 48 - 50:   16 (or more) rows (depending on cup size)
Chest 50 - 52:   17(or more) rows (depending on cup size).
Chest 52 - 54:   20 (or more) rows (depending on cup size).

13.  Grid top: Chain 3 and turn,
 *skip the next stitch, double crochet in the next stitch, chain 1,
repeat from * across the row.

14.  Chain 3 and turn, *double crochet in the next chain 1 space, 
       chain 1, repeat from * across the row.

15.  Child 2 - 6 yrs:  fasten off.
All other sizes: Repeat step 14 for one more row, fasten off.
Weave yarn ends into the finished work.

Chain 2 cords, one for the neck, and one for the body.
Neck cord: approx. 20 to 40 inches.  Pass through the top grid.
Body cord: approx. 45 - 90 inches. Pass through the top row of dc on the bottom section.  See the demo for clarification:

If desired, chain a cord of 14 inches,
pass through the center,  between the breasts,
from the grid row to the double crochet row of the bottom section,
gather and tie into a bow.
OPTIONAL: Sew bra cups inside the halter.
