2 strands ww yarn (Hat: 140-160 yds; Cowl:160-180 yds)

1 strand Bernat Chunky Softee

8 mm knitting needles (worked flat

INSTRUCTIONS: Gauge: 2 stitches and 2 rows = 1 sq. inch

HAT:


1.  Worked flat, bottom up.

With 2 strands of ww yarn OR 1 strand of chunky 

yarn and 8 mm needles:

CAST ON:

 5-12 yrs: 40 stitches;

12-16 yrs: 44 stitches;

Adult: 48 stitches.

 

2.  Work in ribbing , (k1p1), across the row for 4 rows.

 

3. * Knit 1 stitch, purl 3, repeat from * across the row.

 

4.  *Purl 1 stitch, knit 3, repeat from * across the row.

 

5.  Repeat steps 3 and 4 for:

5-12 yrs: 13 rows, or approx. 6 inches

12-16 yrs: 15 rows or approx. 7 inches

Adult: 17 rows or approx. 8 inches.

 

Cast off with a long yarn end, thread it into a yarn needle, weave through the cast off row of stitches, pull to gather and close the top of the hat.  Then sew the back seam of the hat, weave yarn ends into the finished work.

Cowl:

6.  Worked flat, bottom up.

With 2 strands of ww yarn OR 


1 strand of chunky yarn and 8 mm needles:

CAST ON:

5-12 yrs: 40 stitches;

12-16 yrs: 44 stitches;

Adult: 48 stitches.

 

7.  Work in ribbing , k1p1, across the row for

     4   rows.

 

8. * Knit 1 stitch, purl 3, repeat from * across the row.

 

9.  *Purl 1 stitch, knit 3, repeat from * across the row.

 

10.  Repeat steps 3 and 4 for:

5-12 yrs: 13 rows, or approx. 6 inches

12-16 yrs: 15 rows or approx. 7 inches

Adult: 17 rows or approx. 8 inches.


11.  Work in ribbing (k1p1) for 4 rows, cast off with a long yarn end, thread it into a

needle, sew to form a tube. Weave yarn ends into the finished work.
