MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn (182 - 198 yards)
9 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle

INSTRUCTIONS: Gauge: 2 sc and 2 row high = 1 sq. inch

1.  Working with 2 strands of ww yarn and a 9 mm hook:
5-12 yrs: chain 34
     12 - 16: chain 38
     Adult: chain 40

   Slip stitch to join and form a ring.

2.  Chain 2, double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.

3.  Chain 2, alternate front post and back post double crochet 
    across the row, slip stitch to join.

4.  Chain 2, double crochet in each stitch across the row.

5.  (Red yarn shown in this step.)  Chain 2, *single crochet in the 
      next stitch, double crochet in
the next stitch, repeat from* around, slip stitch to join in the top 
of the chain 2. (Red fastened off after this row.)

6.  Chain 2, double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.

7.  Chain 2, alternate front post and back post double crochet 
     across the row, slip stitch to join.

8.  (Changed to red.)  Chain 2, double crochet in each stitch 
     around, slip stitch to join.

9.  Chain 2, alternate front post and back post double crochet 
     around, slip stitch to join.

10. Chain 2, double crochet around, skipping every 3rd stitch, slip 
       stitch to join.

11.  Chain 1, *skip the next 2 stitches, single crochet in the next 
        stitch, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join with a long yarn 
       end, thread it into a needle, weave through the last row of
stitches, pull to gather up and close the top of the hat, take 
several stitches to secure.
Fasten off. Weave yarn ends into the finished work.

1.  Make 2: 
(Working with 9 mm hook (US M/N) and 2 STRANDS OF WW YARN.)

1. Adult: chain 40;  12-16 yrs: chain 36;  5-12 yrs: chain 32

2.  Single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook and in each stitch 
    of the chain.

3.  *Chain 1 and turn, working in the back side of the stitch only,     
     single crochet in each stitch across.
Repeat from* for 2 more rows.

4.  Turn, slip stitch in each stitch around, (to keep the edge firm and 
     prevent it from flaring out.)

Fasten off.  Make 2, then loop together in the center.
Attach the 2 sides together along the center line with the same yarn and a yarn needle.

Then sew the back together: There are 2 options:
Option 1: stack all 4 and either sew with yarn and a yarn needle, or slip stitch to join with the crochet hook.  
Option 2: attach the ends together the width of both sections.
