MATERIALS:
Any size yarn, any size needles.  
These samples used 2 strands of worsted weight yarn, and 4 mm needles

1.  Working with 2 strands of worsted weight yarn:
     Cast on 6 stitches.  (Approx. 1.25 inch button.)
2.  Work in stockinette stitch for 8 rows, casting off each stitch after 
     it is worked in the last row.
3.  Leave a long yarn end, thread it into a needle, 
     weave through all 4 sides, pull to gather up, tuck the corners 
     inside, then pull to tighten up, take several stitches to secure. 
Use plain, or with contrasting color yarn: work X stitches
in the center, and stitch lines along the outside edge.
