MATERIALS:

Worsted weight yarn

Size 6.5mm crochet hook ( US K 10.5)

Yarn needle

INSTRUCTIONS: Gauge: 3 stitches = 1 inch

1.  Newborn to 3 Months: chain 36

     Slip stitch to join being careful not to twist the chain.

2.  Chain 2, double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.

3.  Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.

4.  Change colors if desired.  Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch around.

5.  Begin the bobble pattern:

     Chain 1, single crochet in the same stitch, *triple crochet in the next stitch, single

     crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join in the first single

     crochet of the row.

6.  Chain 3, *single crochet in the next stitch, triple crochet in the next stitch, repeat from

    * around, slip stitch to join in the top stitch of the chain 3 at the beginning of the row.

    (You will be making a triple crochet in the space between

    the triple crochet stitches of the previous row, and a single crochet in the top of the

    triple crochet stitch of the previous row.  This is illustrated in the above video link.)

7.  Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the work, including the band, measures 4 inches.

      Newborn to 3 Months: 4 inches

     8.  Decrease for the top of the hat: 

     Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.

     Chain 1, begin working in a spiral, skipping every 3^rd stitch until the top of the hat is

     closed up.  Fasten off.  Weave the yarn ends into the finished work, closing up any

     opening in the top of the hat if necessary.

HOW TO MAKE A POM POM:

 

1.  Wind yarn around your fingers.

     The more you wind the yarn, the fatter the

      pom-pom. (For a smaller pom pom, wind

      around 2 or 3 fingers. For a larger pompom,

      wind around a 4 or 5 inch piece of cardboard.)

2.  Slide the bundle off, and tie tightly in the

     center with a length of yarn.

3.  Cut open the loops on the ends.

4.  Fluff out, and trim the ends into a rounded

     shape.

Make a loopy flower:

 

1. Wind yarn around fingers.                                            

2.  Tie into a bundle.

      Cut open the loops.

3. Fluff out the yarn.

4. Sew a button in the center.

 1.  Size Newborn to 3 Months:

     Chain 26, double crochet in the 3^rd stitch from the hook, and in each stitch of the chain.

2.  *Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each stitch across the row.  Repeat from * for

     7 more rows, or until the work measures 5 inches.

3.  Reduce for the crotch:  Slip stitch in the first 6 stitches, chain 2, double crochet in the next 11 stitches.  *Chain 2 and 

     turn, double crochet across the row of reduced stitches, repeat from * for 6 more rows.  Fasten off.

Make a separate piece for the opposite side of the diaper cover:

Chain 26, double crochet in the 3^rd stitch from the hook, and in each stitch of the chain.

*Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each stitch across the row, repeat from * for 7 more rows and fasten off.

Attach to the end of the crotch section either by slip stitching to join, or sewing with a yarn needle and yarn.

Sew up the side seams.

Finish up:  Attach yarn in any stitch along one leg opening, chain 1, single crochet evenly around the opening, slip stitch to join and fasten off.  Repeat on the opposite leg opening, and around the waist.

Optional:  Attach a ribbon through any stitch of the waist, tie into a bow.  Or make a bow, and attach it to a hair clip to make it removable.

ADD A SKIRT INSTRUCTIONS:

1.  Attach yarn in either side, on a row of stitches approximately half way between the leg and the waist in 

     the side of a double crochet.  *Chain 1, single crochet in the side of the next double crochet, following the 

     same row of stitches.  Repeat from * around, slip stitch to join.

1.  Chain 2, in each chain 1 space around, make 2 double crochet, at the end of the row, slip stitch to join.

3.  *Chain 2, double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.

     Repeat from * for: 4 more rows

4.  Chain 2, double crochet in the next stitch, *chain 3, double crochet in the next 2 stitches, repeat from * 
     around, slip stitch to join and fasten off.  Weave all yarn ends into the finished work.

 INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Chain 7, single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, and in each stitch of the chain. (For babies, chain 5 or 6 to make a narrower tie.)

2. Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch of the chain.

3. Repeat step 2 until the rectangle is as long as you would like.

 4. Make the pointed end of the tie: * Chain 1 and turn, skip the first stitch, single crochet in the next stitch, and in each stitch, except skip the 2nd to last stitch, and single crochet in the last stitch. Repeat from * one more time. Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in the center stitch of the row, and fasten off. Thread the yarn end into a needle, and rearrange the tip of the tie, and weave the yarn end into the finished work.

5. Form the top of the tie: Fold the opposite end of the tie down approximately 1 inch. With a needle and yarn, sew the fold down, then gather up.

 6. Crochet a smaller rectangle to wrap around the gathered area: Chain 4, single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, and in each stitch of the chain. Chain 1 and turn, single crochet across the row, repeat from * until the rectangle is approx. 2 to 2 ½ inches long, and fasten off. Wrap around the tie, and sew in place. 7. Crochet a chain as long as you need. Pass it through the fold at the top of the tie, and tie around the neck under the collar of the shirt.

Wrap around the center of the bow tie, and sew together. Pass a hair clip through the back of the bow tie, and clip onto a shirt.

1. Crochet a chain any length. This bag works from the bottom up, so the chain should be as wide as you would like the bag to be.

2. Double crochet in the 3rd chain from the hook. *Chain 1, skip the next stitch, double crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * across the row. At the end of the chain, begin working down the other side, making the double crochet in the space between double crochet stitches on the opposite side of the chain. At the end of the row, slip stitch to join in the 2nd stitch of the first 3 stitches skipped.

3. Chain 3, double crochet in the next double crochet. *Chain 1, double crochet in the next double crochet, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join.

4. Repeat step 3 until the bag is as long as you would like it to be. Fasten off. Weave yarn ends into the finished work.

Working with 4 strands of yarn, make a chain of approximately 80 stitches. Pass the cord through the 3rd row of stitches from the top. Tie the two ends in a knot.

Getting Started with Crochet | Crochet for Beginners

Crocheting is a rewarding and relaxing hobby.  And it's a great way to make homespun gifts for loved ones!  You can make everything from a blanket to a scarf -- items for babies, men, women, and children.

So many YouTube users have written to us to tell us that they got their start using Emi's Learn To Crochet Videos.  Recently a young 12-year old user wrote to say that she learned to crochet using Emi's videos, then she learned to make hair scruchies, and she already SOLD 3 of them!!  Way to go!!

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn,  400 grams for women’s  size small, up top 800 grams for large.

Crochet Hook, size 6.5mm (US K 10.5), and size 9mm (US M)

Yarn needle

Ribbon

INSTRUCTIONS: (This garment works from the waist down.)

1.  First measure around the largest part of your hips, and working with a size 6.5mm crochet hook, 

     make a chain to that measurement. (Measuring around the largest part of the hips guarantees a

     garment that will fit properly.)

     Slip stitch to join, being careful not to twist the chain.  See photo 1.

2.  Chain 2,* skip the next chain stitch, double crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * around, slip

     stitch to join. Photo 2 and 3.

3.  Chain 3 and turn, double crochet in the next stitch.  *Chain 1, double crochet in the next double

      crochet, repeat from  * around, slip stitch to join. Photo 4 and 5.

4.  Chain 2, *in the next space between double crochet stitches, make 3 double crochet (shell formed), in the next

     double crochet, make 1 double crochet.  Repeat from * around, slip stitch to join.  (If you end with 2 shells beside

     each other, simply slip a double crochet between them to maintain the stitch pattern.)  Photo 6.

5. Chain 2, *in the center of the next shell stitch, make 3 double crochet (shell formed), skip the next stitch, in the next

    double crochet,  make 1  double crochet.  Repeat from * around, slip stitch to join. Photo 7.

6.  Repeat step 5 until you have reached the end of the torso, (for women’s small, that is approx. 12 inches).  Then

    change to a size 9mm hook, and continue the pattern for as long as you would like the skirt. Photo 9.  Fasten off.

    Weave all yarn ends into the finished work.  Pass a ribbon through the top row of stitches at the waist.  Photo 11.

OPTIONS:

In the shortest version, one row of loops was added.  To make the loops: *Chain 5, skip the next stitch, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join and fasten off.

In the medium length version, after the initial 12 inches of shell pattern, hook size was changed to 9mm for 5 rows, and then 2 rows of 5 double crochet shells were added for flare at the bottom.  To make the 5 dc shells, simply make 5 dc instead of 3 dc shells. Photo 9.

In the long version, the same instructions were used as for the medium length, except 4 rows of 5 dc shells were added.  Photo 10.

IN MAKING SKIRTS, FOR A GARMENT THAT DRAPES AND HANGS  BETTER,  “KILLING”  THE YARN IS AN OPTION.  Normally, “killing” yarn is something we try not to do with knitted or crocheted garments, however in a skirt, and other items such as scarves, “killing” can add to the garment’s fit and feel.  To “kill” the yarn, arrange the skirt on an ironing board, and steam, pressing very heavily, with a wet cloth.  This will cause the yarn to flatten , and become silkier in feel, as well as hanging better on the body when being worn.

CROCHET SUNDRESS

LITTLE SUNDRESS PATTERN, newborn to age 12

MATERIALS:

Worsted weight yarn, or 100% cotton worsted weight yarn

Crochet hook, size 6mm. (US J 10)

Ribbon (1 inch silky ribbon was used in this design, you will need approx. 3 yards)

 (1/4 inch ribbon was used to pass through the bottom of the dress.  You will need approx 3 yards,  perhaps more for larger sizes.)

Yarn needle

Buttons or beads optional (for the barefoot sandals).

INSTRUCTIONS (Gauge is not important in this design.)

1.  First construct the bodice in the ribbing stitch.  (The bodice is worked from side to side.)

     NEWBORN, 3 TO 6 MONTHS,   AND 16 TO 12 MONTHS: Chain 12.   

     AGE 1 to 6: Chain 14,

     AGE 6 to 10 YEARS:  Chain 16,

     AGE 10 to 12 YEARS: Chain 20

   

    Single crochet in the 2^nd  stitch from the hook, and in each stitch of the chain.

*Chain 1 and turn, working in the back side of the stitch only, (ribbing stitch), single crochet in each stitch across the

    row.  Repeat from * until the work measures as follows:  (or is long enough to wrap around the chest, without

    stretching the work too much.  A little bit is fine, but in order for the dress to fit in an appealing way, it should not

    have to totally  stretch out the ribbing stitch.)

   

    NEWBORN: 18 to 19 inches

    3 TO 6 MONTHS: 20 inches

    6 TO 12 MONTHS: 21 inches

    1 TO 2 YEARS: 21 to 22 inches

    3 YEARS: 22 inches

    4 YEARS: 23 inches

    5 YEARS: 24 inches

    6 YEARS: 25 inches

    7 YEARS: 26 inches

    8 YEARS and 9 YEARS: 27 inches

    10 YEARS and 11 YEARS: 28 ½  inches

    12 YEARS: 30 inches

     When the ribbing is long enough, bring the two ends together, and slip stitch to join. (Tube formed)

2. Chain 2, and begin working along the opening of the tube.  Make 2 double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to

     join.  (For a really full skirt, repeat this step once more.  The sample shown (in newborn size)  did not repeat the

     step, however for  larger sizes, this would be an option.)

3.  *Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.  Repeat from * for:

     NEWBORN: 5 more rows.

     3 TO 6 AND 5 TO 12 MONTHS: 6 more rows.

     1 TO 3 YEARS: 10 more rows.

     3 TO 5 YEARS:  14 more rows.

     5 TO 8 YEARS: 16 more rows.

     8 to 12 YEARS: 18 more rows.

     (If working for tall children, add more rows here.)

4. *Chain 3 and turn, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join.

5. * Chain 3, single crochet in the next loop, repeat from * in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.

    Repeat the row above for:

     NEWBORN, and 3 TO 6 MONTHS: 3 more rows.

     6 TO 12 MONTHS: 4 more rows.

     1 to 2 YEARS:  5 more rows.

     3 YEARS: 6 more rows; 4 YEARS: 7 more rows, 5 YEARS: 8 more rows, 6 AND 7 YEARS: 9 more rows,

     8 AND 9 YEARS: 10 more rows, All other sizes: 11 more rows.

     More rows of loops can be added for taller children, or to make the dress longer.

6.  Make the picot edge along the bottom of the dress:

     Chain 1, in each loop around make: single crochet, double crochet, chain 5, slip stitch in the top of the last double

     crochet formed, double crochet, single crochet.  (Picot shell formed.)  At the end of the row, slip stitch to join and

    fasten off.  Weave all yarn ends into the finished work.

  

    The finished dress can be blocked by steaming with a steam iron.

FINISH OFF:

Sew a ribbon on the front and back of the top of the bodice to form straps.  Tie the two ribbons together at the shoulder to form a strap.  (You will need to sew on 4 ribbons, 2 in front, and 2 in back.)

Optional substitute: crochet straps, using the easy headband directions, and attach one strap on each side of the top of the bodice.

Attach a bow to the center front of the bodice.

Pass ½ inch ribbon in any 2 rows along the bottom of the skirt.  Either sew the ribbon ends together and sew a bow over the join, or tie into bows.

 END OF DRESS PATTERN.

MATERIALS:

Worsted weight yarn, 198 grams

Crochet Hook, size 9mm (US M)

Yarn needle

Optional: 2 beads

INSTRUCTIONS:

Gauge is not important in this design.

This design works side to side.

1.  Make a chain as long as you would like your cover-up to be. Photo 2.

     If you would like to add the loopy bottom, make the chain approx. 4 inches shorter

     than you would like the finished garment to be.

2.  Double crochet in the 3^rd stitch from the hook, *chain 1, skip the next stitch, double

     crochet in the next stitch, repeat  from * across the row. 

3.  Chain 3 and turn, double crochet in the next double crochet,

    *chain 1, double crochet in the next double crochet.  Repeat from * across the row, ending with a double crochet in

     the 2^nd stitch of the chain 3.

    For each remaining row: chain 3 and turn, *double crochet in the next double crochet,

    chain 1, repeat from * across the row ending with a double crochet in the 2^nd stitch of the chain 3.  Make as many

    rows as required to wrap around the body with a loose fit.   Photo 3.

To make the optional loopy bottom: Photo 4 and 5.

Attach yarn in the end stitch on either side of the bottom of the rectangle, *chain 5, single crochet in the next open space, repeat from * across the row.

 At the end of the row, *chain 5 and turn, single crochet in next loop, repeat from * across the row.

 Make as many loopy rows as you would like.

 In the above photos, the sample on the mannequin form has 3 rows, the skirt style has 3 rows, and the other sample has 5 rows.

FOR THE TUNIC, make the ties for around the neck: Photos 6 and 7.

Working with 4 strands of yarn,

chain 2 cords of 35 stitches each.

Optional: add a bead on the end of each tie.

Pass through a stitch in the front, and tie in an overhand knot.

Tie the cords around the neck.

For a skirt style, chain a cord as long as you need for the waist, pass through the top row of open spaces, and tie around the waist.

Place the opening on the side as shown in the photo above.  Tie around the waist, or above the bust.

DRESS STYLE:

For the dress style, the rectangle was sewn together, and the seam placed on the side.  Then the ties for around the neck were attached.

This sample was blocked when finished.

2 methods for blocking:

Wet the garment and lay flat on a large towel, arrange as desired.  Allow to dry for a day or more.

Or:
