FREE KNITTING PATTERN: #2493K BASIC UNISEX KNIT HAT

2493k- BASIC CHUNKY KNIT HAT

Knit a quick and easy basic unisex hat in any size from newborn up to adult!
Work with 2 strands of ww yarn (Bernat Premium recommended), OR 1 strand of chunky or bulky yarn.

MATERIALS:
2 strands worsted  weight yarn OR 1 strand bulky or chunky yarn (45-120 yds of ww yarn)
8 mm knitting needles (worked flat)
Yarn needle

INSTRUCTIONS: Gauge: 3 stitches and 3 rows = 1 sq. inch
Block the finished garment by lightly spraying with water, place flat on a towel, arrange into shape, pat down lightly to flatten the stitches, allow to dry undisturbed.

With 2 strands ww and 8 mm needles: 
(or 1 strand chunky or bulky yarn)
Newborn - 3 months:  cast on 36 stitches
3-6 months: Cast on 40 stitches
 6-12 months: Cast on 44 stitches
1-3 yrs:  Cast on 48 stitches
3-6 yrs: Cast on 52 stitches
6- 12 yrs: Cast on 56 stitches
Adult: Cast on 60 stitches

2.  Knit every row for:
     Newborn to 6 months: 2 rows
     6 -12 mths: 3 rows
     1-3 yrs: 4 rows
     3-6 yrs: 5 rows
     6-12 yrs: 6 rows
     Adult: 7 rows

3.  Work stockinette stitch for: (knit one row, purl one row)
Newborn - 3 months: 12rows ,cast off with a long yarn end.
3-6 months: 13 rows, cast off with a long yarn end.
6-12 months: 14 rows, cast off with a long yarn end.
1-3 yrs:  15 rows, cast off with a long yarn end.
3-6 yrs:  16 rows, cast off with a long yarn end.
6- 12 yrs: 17 rows, cast off with a long yarn end.
Adult: 18 rows, cast off with a long yarn end.

Thread yarn end into a needle, weave through the last row of stitches passing through every 4th stitch, pull to gather up and close the top of the hat, take several stitches to secure, then sew the back seam of the hat. (The mattress stitch is recommended for an almost invisible seam.)





 Make a pom pom and attach to the top of the hat.
Pom pom:
Wrap  yarn around fingers or cardboard.
Slide off and tie in the center.

Cut the loops open and fluff out.
Trim evenly into a ball.
