BLOCKING: Basically there are 2 ways of blocking.
1.  Steam blocking: arrange item on a flat surface, hold steam iron above the surface, (not touching the surface), and
   steam. Allow the item to dry in the shape desired.
2.  Immerse in water, and squeeze water out, or spray with water. Arrange item on a thick bath towel, shape
as desired, allow to dry undisturbed.

MATERIALS:
Red Heart Chunky Yarn, **OR** 2 strands worsted weight yarn
One pair straight 8 mm needles, (worked flat)
Yarn needle

INSTRUCTIONS:  Gauge: 3 stitches long and 3 rows = 1 sq. inch
All sizes:
Cast on 5 stitches.
Work garter stitch, (knit every row) until the rectangle wraps around the head, cast off, thread the yarn end into a yarn needle, and sew the 2 ends together. Weave yarn ends into the finished work.
AVERAGE HEAD SIZES: 5-12 YRS: 20 INCHES, 12-16 YRS: 21 INCHES; ADULT: 22 - 24INCHES

1.  Chain 7, single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, and each 
     stitch of the chain.

2.  Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch across the row.

3.  Repeat step 2 until the work measures approx. 2 inches.

4.  Turn, slip stitch into the first stitch, single crochet in the next 3 
    stitches, leave the last stitch unworked.

5.  Repeat step 4 until the work measures:
   Newborn- 3 months: 3 3/4 inches
   3 - 6 months: 4 inches
   6 - 12 months: 4.5 inches

6.  Chain 2, work half-double crochet in each stitch around all 4 
     sides of the work, slip stitch to
join in the top of the first half-double crochet stitch.

7.  Chain 2 and turn, half-double crochet around, working in the 
     back side of the stitch only, slip stitch to join in the top of the 
    chain 2.

8.  Place markers directly above the increase spot on the soles.        
    Chain 2, half-double crochet up
to the first marker, then decrease across the top of the foot 
up to the next marker: chain 2,
work decrease in the next 3 stitches: 
yarn over the hook, pull up 
a loop in each of the next 3 stitches,

then complete the double crochet stitch. After reaching 
the next marked stitch, finish
the row with half-double crochet in each stitch, slip stitch to join 
in the top of the chain 2.

9.  Repeat step 8, decreasing across the top of the foot one more 
     time.

10. For little girl Mary Jane booties, fasten off, and add a bow in 
    front, or pass a ribbon around
the opening, and tie in front.

   For tall booties:
11. Popcorn stitch row: 
Chain 2, yarn around the hook, in the same stitch, *pull up a 
loop, pick up the yarn, pull
through 2 loops, repeat from* 3 more times, then complete the
double crochet.
*Double crochet in the next stitch, in the next stitch make a 
popcorn stitch by pulling up a
loop 5 times, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join in 
the top of the first chain 2.  

Chain 2, double crochet in each stitch
around, slip stitch to join and fasten off,
weave yarn ends into the finished work.

Slip stitch to join being careful not to twist the chain.


2.  Chain 2, double crochet in each 
    stitch around, slip stitch 
    to join, again being careful not to
twist the work.

1.  Fold the work in half, and mark the stitch at the hook, and 
     at the fold.
(Note: you should have the same number of stitches on 
each side of the marked stitches.)
Chain 2, make 2 double crochet in the same stitch, chain 
2, make 3 more double crochet in
the same stitch. (center front shell of the poncho),
*skip the next 2 stitches, double crochet in the next 3 
stitches, chain 2,
repeat from* up to the next marked stitch (ending with a 
chain 2 before the marked stitch)..
In the marked stitch make: 3 double crochet,chain 2, 3 
double crochet.
*skip the next 2 stitches, double crochet in the next 3 
stitches, repeat from * up to the
end of the row, ending with a chain 2 space, slip stitch to 
join in the top of the first chain 2.
(There should be the same number of 3 dc clusters and 
chain 2 spaces on each side of the
center shells.)

2.  Turn, slip stitch into the first chain 2 space,
chain 2, (takes the place of the first dc),
make 2 more double crochet in the same chain 2 space,
*chain 2, (forms a chain 2 space), make 3 double crochet 
in the next chain 2 space.
repeat from * up to and including the last chain 2 space 
before the center shell,
(make sure to add a chain 2 space before working the 
center shell)
in the chain 2 space of the shell, make a shell: 3 double 
crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet,
then *chain 2, 3 double crochet in the next chain 2 space, 
repeat from * up to the next shell,
(ending with a chain 2 space),
in the chain 2 space of the shell, make a shell: 3 double 
crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet,
*chain 2, make 3 double crochet in the next chain 2 space.
Repeat from * up to the end of the row ending with 
a chain 2 space, slip stitch to join in the top
of the first chain 2.

3.  Repeat step 2 until the poncho is as long as desired.  
(Remember to work into the chain 2 space before and 
after each center shell, as this is what
causes the poncho to increase in size.)

4.  Bottom Edge:  (Optional, a fringe could be added instead 
     of the picot edge.)
     Repeat step 2, but in each 3dc cluster form the picot in 
     this manner:
     double crochet, double crochet, chain 3, slip stitch 
     into the top of the last dc, double crochet. 

In the center shells: 3 double crochet, chain 3, slip stitch 
into the last dc,3 double crochet.
