MATERIALS:

Worsted weight yarn

5.5 mm crochet hook

Pillow form

Yarn needle

I used 3 colors: turquoise, purple, and dark green

1.  Chain 5, slip stitch to join and form a ring.

 

2.  Chain 3, make 15 triple crochet (tc) in the ring, slip stitch to join in the top of the chain 3.

3.  Chain 2, working in the back side of the stitch only, make 2 dc in each stitch around, slip stitch

to join. (32)

 

4.  Chain 3 (counts as a dc and ch1), double crochet in the same stitch, *skip the next stitch,  

in the next ch 1 space make: dc, ch1,dc, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join in the 2nd

stitch of the chain 3.  (Sixteen tr “V” stitches formed.)

 

5.  (I fastened off and attached a purple color in the next chain 1 space).

Chain 2, make 2 dc in the same stitch, in each chain 1 space around, make 3 dc.

At the end of the row, chain 1, slip stitch to join in the top of the chain 2.

(16 3dc clusters formed.)

 

6.  Chain 2 and turn (counts as a dc), working in the space between the 3dc clusters, make

3 dc in the same space.

In every space between the 3 dc clusters, make 4 dc, slip stitch to join in the top of the

chain 2. (16 4dc clusters formed.)

 

7.  (I fastened off and attached turquoise yarn in the center of the next  4dc cluster.

 (Between the 2^nd and 3^rd dc of the 4dc cluster.)

Chain 3, make 4 triple crochet in that stitch.  

In the center space of each 4dc cluster, make 5 triple crochet,

at the end of the row, slip stitch to join in the top of the chain 3. (Sixteen 5tc clusters formed.)

 

8. Turn, working in the space between the 5 tc clusters, chain 3, make 5 tc in the same

space. In the space between every 5 tc cluster make 6 triple crochet, at the end of the

row, slip stitch to join in the top of the chain 3. Fasten off. (Sixteen 6tc clusters formed.)

 

9. I fastened off and attached purple yarn in the next space between the 6tc cluster.  Chain 3,

make 6 tc in the same space.  In every space between every 6 tc cluster, make 7 tc

At the end of the row, slip stitch to join in the top of the chain 3. (Sixteen 7tc clusters formed.)

 

FOR A ROUND PILLOW, FASTEN OFF, MAKE 2, THEN SLIP STITCH ALL AROUND THE OUTSIDE EDGE, STOPPING TO PLACE A ROUND FORM INSIDE THEN FINISH THE SEAM.  **OR** SEW AROUND WITH A NEEDLE AND SAME COLOR YARN.

TURN YOUR CIRCLE

INTO A SQUARE:

 

Place a marker in every 4^th7tc cluster.

 

 

 

 

 10. Begin in the first stitch of a corner 7tc cluster.

Chain 3, (counts as a tr),

 triple crochet in the next stitch,

double crochet in the next stitch,

5 double crochet in the next stitch,

double crochet in the next stitch,

triple crochet in the remaining 2 stitches.

 

 

 

11.  Next 7tc cluster:

Triple crochet in the first stitch,

double crochet in the next stitch

slip stitch in the next 3 stitches

double crochet in the next stitch

triple crochet in the last stitch.

 

 

 

12.  Repeat step 11 in the next two 7tc clusters.

13.  In the next 7tc cluster form a corner;

     triple crochet, triple crochet, double crochet, 5 double crochet, double crochet, triple

crochet, triple crochet.

 

14.  Repeat steps11, 12, and 13 around all 4 sides of the

work, slip stitch to join in the top of the first chain 3.

 

15.   Chain 2, double crochet in every

stitch around, BUT, in the center

stitch of the 5 dc corner, work 5 dc.  

At the end of the round, slip stitch to

join in the top of the first

chain 2.

 

16.  Repeat step 15.

17.  I fastened off and attached turquoise

yarn, and worked step 15 for 2 more

rows.

IF YOU NEED MORE ROWS, SIMPLY REPEAT STEP 15.

 

MAKE 2, SEW AROUND 3 SIDES, INSERT PILLOW FORM, SEW THE REMAINING SEAM.

(Note: even if your square is not completely square, it will adjust when the pillow form is

inserted inside.  Or you can block the square.)

MATERIALS:

Worsted weight yarn, (Red Heart Ombre used in this design, 1 skein of 482 yards)

6.5 mm crochet hook (or any size hook)

Yarn needle

 

INSTRUCTIONS:  Works top down, gauge not imp, 3 sc and 3 rows = 1 sq. Inch

Finished shawl measures: 22 inches long (after blocking) and 62 inches wide.

I used 360 yards.  

Adding an additional row of loops on the bottom will require 30 yards.

(2 rows will require 60 yards).

Making the shawl wider will require 150 yards for every 12 inches.

 

 1.   Chain 153, or any length required for your arm span,(in odd number) or to wrap

around your body.(One skein was used for the sample shown, 5 foot span.  

Larger sizes will require more yarn.)

2.   Double crochet in the 3^rd stitch from the hook, (forms the first ‘v’ stitch), skip the

next 2 stitches,* double crochet in the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches, in the next

stitch make: double crochet, chain 1, double crochet (‘v’ stitch), skip the next 2

stitches.  Repeat from * across the row (ending with a ‘v’ stitch).

 

3.  Turn, slip stitch into the first chain 1 space, chain 3, double crochet in the same

stitch (‘v’ stitch), *double crochet in the next stand alone double crochet, ‘v’ stitch in

the next ‘v’ stitch, repeat from * across the row.

 

4.  Repeat step 3 for 3 more rows.

 

5 Turn, *chain 3, skip the next stitch, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat from *

across the row.

 

6 Turn, *chain 3, single crochet in the next loop, repeat from * across the row.

 

7  Repeat step 6 for 3 more rows.

 

8  Chain 3 and turn, make 3 triple crochet in each loop across.

 

9.  Chain 3 and turn, make a triple crochet in each stitch across the row.

 

10  Turn, *chain 3, skip the next stitch, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat from*

across the row.

 

11.  Turn, *chain 3, single crochet in the next loop, repeat from * across.

 

12.  Repeat step 11 for 3 more rows.

 

13. Chain 3 and turn, make 2 triple crochet in each loop across.

 

14.  Turn, single crochet in the first stitch, *skip the next 2 stitches, make 5 double

crochet in the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches, single crochet in the next stitch,

repeat from * across, adjusting skipped stitches if necessary to end with a single

crochet in the last stitch.

 

15. Turn, *chain 5, single crochet in the next double crochet, repeat from * across the

row, skipping the single crochet between shells (do not work into the single crochet

stitch, go directly to the next double crochet stitch to form the next ch 5 loop).

 

16. Turn, *chain 5, single crochet in the next loop, repeat from * across the bottom of the

shawl, then work up the side, making the single crochet in the side of the stitch of

each row, then across the top, skipping the equivalent space (I worked into the space

between the ‘v’ stitch and the dc), then down the opposite front, 

and fasten off.  The shawl will seem short at this point, but if you stretch it you can

estimate the finished length after blocking.  Sample shown is 22 inches long after

blocking.)

Weave yarn ends into the finished work.

 

This shawl requires blocking.  

Saturate in water, spread on a large bath towel, pull

down to stretch and open up the stitches.  

Blocking with add 6 to 8 inches to the length.

For a longer shawl, either:

  Add more rows of loops in step 12

Or

Add more rows of chain 5 loops in step 16.
