MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn
Small: (dark gray: 260yds; Light gray: 350 yds )
Medium: (dark gray: 320  yds; Light gray: 480 yds)
Large: (dark gray: 450 yds; Light gray: 550 yds)
9 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle

CHEST/HIPS SIZES:

XSMALL: 31-34 INCHES

SMALL: 35- 40 INCHES

MEDIUM: 40-44 INCHES

LARGE: 44-48 INCHES

XL: 49-52 INCHES

2XL: 53-57 INCHES

3XL: 57-60 INCHES

4XL: 61-65 INCHES

5XL: 66-70 INCHES

1.  ALL SIZES: Chain 5, slip stitch to join and form a ring.

2.  Chain 2, make 15 double crochet in the ring. Slip stitch to join in the top of the    
     chain 2. (16 stitches, chain 2 counts as 1 dc)

3.  Chain 4, turn, (takes the place of 1 tr, and 1 chain 1 space), *triple crochet in the        next stitch, chain 1, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join in the 3rd stitch 
      of the 1st chain 4 (16 tr plus 16 chain 1 spaces)

4.  Chain 3 and turn, make 2 triple crochet in the same space.  In every chain 1 
     space around, make 3 triple crochet, slip stitch to join in the
     top of the 1st chain 3. (48 tr)


5.  *Chain 5, skip the next 2 stitches, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat from *
around, at the end of the row single crochet in the base of the 1st chain 5. (16 
loops)


6.  Slip into the next loop, chain 3, (takes the place of a tr), make 4 more triple 
     crochet in the same loop. In each remaining loop around, make 5 triple crochet, 
     slip stitch to join in the top of the chain 3. (80 tr)

7.  NECK OPENING: 
Chain 25, skip the next 15 stitches, single crochet in the next stitch, check to 
see if the opening measures at least 22 inches, if not, add more chain stitches, 
single crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join in the first chain stitch. 
(Stitch count no longer imp.)

8.   Fasten off, attach a new color in the same stitch. Chain 2, double crochet in 
      each stitch of the neck chain, then working around, double crochet in each 
      stitch, but
       ADULT SMALL: making 2 double crochet in every 4th stitch.
ADULT MEDIUM: making 2 double crochet in every 3rd stitch.
ADULT LARGE: making 2 double crochet in every 2nd stitch.

    At the end of the row, slip stitch to join in the top of the chain 2.


9. *Chain 3, skip the next stitch, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * 
     around.   Single crochet to join in the base of the 1st chain 3 loop.

10. Every following row will be the same until the bottom border:
Slip stitch into the next loop, *chain 3, single crochet in the next loop, repeat 
from *around, end the row by slip stitching into the base of the first loop.  (If you 
are new at crochet, it would be best to mark the first loop of the row, as it is 
easy to miss it.)
Repeat from * for as many rows as desired, fasten off. (Front should reach 
approx. at elbows).  *NOTE, the poncho will stretch,
so if you do not block it, be prepared for it to grow longer with wearing.

11. BOTTOM BORDER:  Attach 2 strands of worsted weight yarn in the fasten off 
    stitch, slip stitch into the next loop.
    Chain 3, make 2 additional triple crochet in the same loop, in every remaining 
    loop, make 3 triple crochet, slip stitch to join in the top of the chain 3.  Fasten off.

12.  COLLAR: (one strand worked in this design) 
Attach yarn in the center back stitch, chain 2, double crochet in each stitch 
around, slip stitch to join.  Check measurement to be 22 - 24 inches when 
slightly stretched.
    *Chain 2, and turn,  double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.
Repeat from * to make as many rows as desired, fasten off, weave all yarn 
ends into the  finished work.

BLOCKING:  Either saturate in water in the sink, squeeze out water, place flat on a thick back towel, stretch as much as possible, allow to dry undisturbed.
OR
Spray heavily with a water bottle, stretch as much as possible, lay flat to dry undisturbed, or
hang on a hanger to dry.

1.  Working with 2 strands of worsted weight yarn, and a 9 mm or 
     larger crochet hook:

4.  Chain 2 and turn, double crochet around, making 2 double

5.  Age 2 to 4: Go to step 6.

Age 4 - 6: Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each
                 stitch around, slip stitch to join.
                Chain 2 and turn, double crochet around, making 2 
                double crochet in every 6th stitch, slip stitch to join. (42 
                 stitches)

Age 6 - 8: Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each 
                 stitch around, slip stitch to join.

Age 8 to 10: Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each stitch

Age 10 to 12: *Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each stitch 
              around, slip stitch to join.

Age 12 - 16: *Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each stitch 
             around, slip stitch to join.
              Repeat from * for one more row.
              Chain 2 and turn, double crochet around, making 2 
              double crochet in every 2nd stitch, slip stitch to join. ( 54 
             stitches)

Adult small to medium: *Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in 
             each stitch around, slip
             stitch to join. Repeat from * for one more row.
            Chain 2 and turn, double crochet around, making 2 
            double crochet in every stitch, slip stitch to join. (72 
             stitches).

Adult medium to large: Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each 
stitch around, slip stitch to join. Repeat from * for one more row.
Chain 2 and turn, double crochet around, making 2 double 
crochet in every stitch, slip stitch to join. (72 stitches).
Chain 2 and turn, double crochet around, making 2 double 
crochet in every 9th stitch, slip stitch to join. (81 stitches)


6.  *Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each stitch around, DO 
        NOT SLIP STITCH TO JOIN.
(It’s optional whether or not to close the mermaid tail, but I 
think it is a hazard to have it
closed in case one has to get up in a hurry, however, if you wish 
to , simply slip stitch to join after every row.)
Repeat from * for:
Age 2 - 4: 12 more rows, fasten off.
Age 4 -6: 14 more rows, fasten off.
Age 6-8: 15 more rows, fasten off.
Age 8-10: 18 more rows, fasten off.
Age 10-12: 22 more rows, fasten off.
Age 12-16: 28 more rows, fasten off.
Adult small to medium: 36 - 40 rows, fasten off.
Adult medium to large: 40 - 44 rows, fasten off.  (Add more rows 
for taller persons.)


FINS: MAKE 2:
Age 2 - 8: chain 20,
Age 8 - 12: chain 24
Age 12 - 16: Chain 30
Adult small - medium: chain 32
Adult Large: chain 34

double crochet in the 4th stitch from the hook, and each 
stitch of the chain.
Chain 2 and turn, working in the back side of the stitch only
double crochet in each stitch across the row.
*Turn, slip stitch into the first 3 stitches, chain 2, double crochet 
in each stitch of the row, (back side only).  Chain 2 and turn, 
double crochet in each stitch across the row, leave the last 3
stitches not worked.  
Repeat from * until there are only approx. 6 - 8 stitches in the 
row, fasten off.



Either slip stitch or sew the 2 sections of the fins together, and attach to the end of the mermaid tail, gathering to fit.  Weave all yarn ends into the finished work.

MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn, (Red Heart Super Saver, 2 skeins
9 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle

1.  S: Chain 63;   Medium: Chain 69;  Large to XL: Chain 75
2.  Mark the center stitch of the row.
Working with a 9 mm hook, and 1 strand of worsted weight yarn:
Double crochet in the 3rd stitch from the hook (“V”stitch),
*skip the next 2 stitches,
in the next stitch make: double crochet, chain 1, double crochet (V stitch);
repeat from * up to the marked stitch in the center, skipping 2 stitches before the center
stitch.  
In the center stitch make: 3 double crochet, chain 1, 3 double crochet.  
*Skip the next 2 stitches,V stitch in the next stitch,
repeat from, * across the row.
(S: 20 V stitch, 1 shell;   M-L: 22V stitch, 1 shell;   L- XL: 24 V stitch, 1 shell)
3.  Turn, slip stitch into the next chain 1 space, chain 3, double crochet in the same stitch.
Make a V stitch in every chain 1 space up to the center stitch.  
In the chain 1 space of the center stitch make: 3 double crochet, chain 1, 3 double
crochet.  
      V stitch in every remaining chain 1 space of the row.

4.  Repeat step 3 until the poncho is as long as desired.  (Block to get the true length, or the
poncho will lengthen with wear.)

5.  Make 2 identical pieces, one for the front and one for the back.

Stack and sew across the shoulders, and down the sides, leaving openings for the arms.
