BLOCKING: Basically there are 2 ways of blocking.

1.  Steam blocking: arrange item on a flat surface, hold steam iron 

      above the surface, (not touching the surface), and

       steam. Allow the item to dry in the shape desired.

2.  Immerse in water, and squeeze water out, or spray with water. 

     Arrange item on a thick bath towel, shape

as desired, allow to dry undisturbed.

MATERIALS:

Caron Chunky Cakes, (Plum Pretty), one ball (150 - 200 YDS)    (OR 2 strands of worsted weight yarn: 300- 400 yds)

15 mm straight knitting needles, (US 19)

Yarn needle

INSTRUCTIONS: Gauge: 1 stitch and 1 row = 1 sq. inch

1.  Works sideways.

All sizes: Cast on 30 stitches.

2.  Knit across the row for 4 rows.

3.  Work in ribbing (k1p1) for 6 rows.

4.  Repeat step 2 and 3 until the shawl is long enough,

ending with step 2.

Weave yarn ends into the finished work.

9 mm straight knitting needles (worked flat) (US 13)
  (Any size needle can be used up to 12 mm,
   sample shown used 12 mm needles.)

Yarn needle

Gauge: 2.5 stitches and 2 rows - 1 sq. inch

INSTRUCTIONS:

1.  Works end to end.

With 2 strands of ww yarn, cast on 20 stitches

  

2.  Work in ribbing stitch for 4          rows (k2,p2)

3.  Knit across the next row.

4.  Knit the first 4 stitches, purl across the row but knit the last 4 

    stitches. (This will form the edges shown in the photo.)

5.  Repeat step 3 and 4 one more time. 

6.  Roman Stitch formed in the next 2 rows:

Knit the first 4 stitches, *purl the next stitch, knit the next stitch, 

repeat from * across the

row, knitting the last 4 stitches.

Knit the first 4 stitches, *knit the next stitch, purl the next stitch, 

repeat from * across the row, knitting the last 4 stitches.

7.  Repeat step 4,5 and 6 until the rectangle is as long as desired for 

     the length of the scarf,

     ending with 4 rows of ribbing, (k2,p2).  Cast off.

SAWMILL VIDEO

1.  Working with 2 strands of worsted weight yarn, and 8 mm 

     straight knitting needles:(worked flat)

Cast on:  5-12 yrs: cast on 44 stitches

        12-16 yrs: cast on 48 stitches

        Adult average: cast on 52 stitches

        Adult Large: cast on 54 stitches

2. Work in ribbing, k 1, p1, for 4 rows.

3. Work in garter stitch, (knit every row) for:

       5-12 yrs: 4 rows

        12-16 yrs: 5 rows

        Adult average: 5 rows

        Adult Large: 6 rows

4.   Repeat step 2 and 3 for: (all sizes) 3 times, casting off 

      each stitch after it is worked in the last row.

Fasten off with a long yarn end, thread it into a yarn needle, 

weave through the last row of

stitches, passing through every 4^th stitch, pull to gather up and 

close the top of the hat, take several stitches to secure, 

then sew the back seam of the hat. Weave yarn ends into the

finished work.

The Shale stitch is cast on in multiples of 18 stitches,

and worked a repeat of 4 rows.

14 INCH WIDE SCARF-SHAWL-COWL cast on 54 stitches. Use Worsted weight yarn, and any size needle.

The pink sample shown used 4 mm needles, 

the video demo with teal yarn used 6 mm needles.

Step 1, 

band at end of scarf/cowl:

Cast on 54 stitches,

then knit across the row for 10 rows (bottom band)  

(Or cast on in multiples of 18 for any width desired.)

The Old Shale stitch consists of repetition of 4 rows:

1.  Knit across the row.

2.  Purl across the next row.

3.  *Knit 2 together 3 times;

yarn over the needle, knit 1, 6 times;

knit 2 together 3 times,

repeat from* across the row.

4.  Knit across the row.

Repeat steps 1 - 4, until the rectangle is as long as desired,

 in this sample, 28 inches for an over-lapped cowl/scarf.

Then for the band on the opposite end, knit across the row for 10 rows, cast off. (Total length 30 inches.)
