MATERIALS:

Worsted weight yarn, Yarn required for each item (hat and cowl):

5-12 yrs: 130 yds; 12-16 yrs: 145 yds; Adult: 160 yds)

6 mm crochet hook or 6.5 mm hook Yarn needle

INSTRUCTIONS: Gauge: 3 sc and 3 rows = 1 sq. inch

1. Works bottom up: (Started with blue yarn)


 5-12 yrs: chain 52, sstj being careful not to twist the chain.

12-16 yrs: chain 56, sstj being careful not to twist the chain

adult: chain 60, sstj being careful not to twist the chain



2. (Blue yarn) Chain 2, double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.

 

3. (Blue yarn) Chain 2, alternate front post and back post double crochet around, slip stitch to join.

4. (Red Yarn) Chain 2, double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.

 

5. Repeat step 2 and 3 and 4 for:


5-12 yrs: 3 times

12-16 yrs: 3 times

Adult: 4 times

 

6. Fasten off.

FOR THE COWL: Weave yarn ends into the finished work.

 

FOR THE HAT: leave a long yarn end, thread it into a yarn needle, weave through the last row of stitches, passing through every 3rd stitch, pull to gather up and close the top of the hat, weave yarn ends into the finished work.

Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn

5-12 yrs: 55 yds; Adult S: 70 yds, L: 100 yds

OR

Bernat Softee Chunky

Or

2 strands of ww yarn.

9 mm knitting needles

Yarn needle

INSTRUCTIONS:

2.  Worked heel to toe. Cast on:

     5-8 yrs: Cast on 20 stitches

8-12 yrs: Cast on 24 stitches

Adult Small: Cast on 28 stitches

Adult Medium: Cast on 32 stitches

Adult Large: Cast on 36 stitches

 

3.  Knit every row until the work measures:

     5-8 yrs:3 inches slightly stretched

8-12 yrs: 3.5 inches slightly stretched

Adult Small: 4 inches slightly stretched

Adult Medium: 5 inches slightly stretched

Adult Large: 6 inches slightly stretched.

4.  Cast off:

     5-8 yrs: cast off 3 stitches, knit across the row (17)

8-12 yrs: cast off 3 stitches, knit across the row. (21)

Adult Small:cast off  4 stitches, knit across the remainder of the row. (24)

Adult Medium: cast off 4 stitches, knit across the row. (28)

Adult Large: cast off 4 stitches, knit across the row. (32)

 

5.  Repeat step 4. (14, 18, 20, 24, 28)

 

6.  Work in ribbing (k2p2) until the work is the total length of the required size according

to the following charts.

 

7.  Knit 2 stitches together across the row.

8. Repeat step 7.

 

9.  Cast off, leave a long yarn end. Thread it into a  

needle, weave through the cast off row,   

pull to gather and close the toe end, then sew

across the foot.

 (Note: for snug cuffs, sew across the entire

length, for open cuffs, stop the seam where

the cuffs begin.)

10.  Sew the  heel end closed. Weave yarn ends

into the finished work.
